How the Gizmo plug-and-play device worksThe getRightThere Gizmo GPS teen tracking device is powered from the vehicles OBD connection (even when the vehicle is off). The device gets its own location from satellites, the sends that information to our data center where it is accessible by you via our online web portal. When you purchase a device, your personalized web portal is created and the access information is sent to you via email. So if you have multiple teen drivers in the house, you can track all of them from one central dashboard.
How the Gizmo teen vehicle tracking device plugs in...OBD stands for On Board Diagnostics. ALL vehicles that are 1996 or newer have the OBD plug as it was mandated by the transportation authority. Our device gets power and vehicle info from this plug and then transmits it back to our data center where you can access it via our online web portal. The OBD outlet is located near the steering column and is as simple as plugging in a lamp.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHow often does the unit report back? Every minute or less. Each signal leaves a bread crumb on the map indicating speed, distance and address, hard braking, acceleration alerts and more.
Can't my teen driver simply unplug the unit if they don't want to be tracked? They can, but the system will record when it goes inactive as well as when it is plugged back in. Each of these are reported on the map as well so you can learn more. We suggest you simply tell the your teen driver that you are alerted when it is disconnected and plugged back in. The other solution would be to purchase the hard-wired device rather than the plug version so it can't be seen or tampered with. The hardwired version is literally installed behind the vehicle's dashboard, out of sight.
Will my teen know I'm tracking them? That's up to you. The plug-in device may be visible, it depends on where exactly the OBD port is located. On some vehicles it's virtually out of sight, on others you may be able to see it. If for some reason you purchase the simple plug-and-play unit and decide you need a hard-wired version, just return it and we'll swap the units for you.
Can I install the hard-wired unit myself? If you purchase a hard-wired unit, we recommend you take it to Best Buy and have their trained professionals install it for you. If you want a simple device that requires no installation, just purchase the plug-and-play version.
Can I receive alerts via SMS and Email? Yes. You can easily set up to receive alerts by group of vehicles or individual vehicles for speeding, entering and exiting geofences and more.
Do you provide Gizmo training on how to login and track my teen's car online? Yes we can, but you won't need it. If you can click a mouse you can track your teen's car and run reports. It's simple. If you need help, we're always a phone call away.
Can I view reports and maps on my iPhone or Blackberry? Yes. We have a mobile device interface specifically for this.
Does this work anywhere in the US? Yes. From Alaska to Hawaii coverage is awesome. If for some reason you have difficulty with coverage, we will refund you for the unit when it is returned, no questions asked.
Does this work anywhere in the world? Almost. There are units reporting from all over the world even in the remote corners of South Africa. We'd be more than happy to send you a unit to test in your area, if it doesn't report just send it back no questions asked.
Does this device drain my battery? Geez no. It pulls a minuscule amount of power.
